Covering the Belmont Stakes had never been more exciting. While this was not the first time I covered the race with a Triple Crown contender, the energy and enthusiasm generated by California Chrome was unlike anything I had ever experienced at this type of event. California Chrome was a cinderella story, an underdog owned by a couple of “regular” hardworking guys in a field dominated by the very financially privileged, it truly was “the little engine that could”. Belmont was packed with thousands of dreamers from all different walks of life hoping to be a part of history. People wearing nose strips in a show of solidarity with the horse and a overall kumbaya feeling that united the crowd in a single chant; “Bring it home Chrome, bring it on home” . Even tough the story did not have a happy ending, my heart was content, I indulged in a visual sea of humanity and color that by the end of the night was quickly healing their broken hearts with a new chant; “Let’s Go Rangers”.
