Alejandra Villa combines a photojournalist’s instinct with an eye for art to capture life’s most poignant moments, striving with each shot to reveal the essence and beauty of her subjects. Quick thinking, graceful and creative, Alejandra has an innate knack for finding the ideal way to honestly depict intimacy and emotion.
A native of Medellin, Colombia, Alejandra came to the US to follow a lifelong dream of becoming a professional photographer. For the past 19 years, she’s been an award-winning staff photographer for Newsday in New York, covering pivotal news events including the September 11 terrorist attacks, the crash for Flight 587, the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy, the inauguration of President Barack Obama and the Pope’s visit among many others.
Alejandra’s work has been recognized by (POYI) Pictures of the Year International, (NPPA) National Press Photographer’s Association , (NYPPA) New York Press Photographer’s Association, Northern Shortcourse, Associated Press, Newswomen’s Club of New York, NY Press Club, The Deadline Club, American Photography. Most recently her work documenting the struggle of a little girl with a rare disorder made her a finalist for the prestigious Scripps Howard Foundation Award. Her video work has won her 5 NY Emmy Awards.
Alejandra infuses passion and dedication into every assignment, using the camera as a passport into people’s lives. Her photos tell stories that are pure, vivid, moving and inspirational.
